The More Things Change….

Wawona Tree PostcardsTwo views of the “Wawona Tree” in Yosemite National Park, the card on the left from around 1930, the other from the early ’70s. The first card has this description on the reverse:

‘Wawona’ in the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees, about 4,000 years old, 227 feet high and 90 feet in circumference at the base, with a hole large enough to permit the widest and highest vehicle to pass through and ample room to spare on either side.

The second, postcard offers an update on the back:

WAWONA TREE Yosemite National Park, California – This well-known tree stood in the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees until the winter of 1968-69. The tunnel through it was cut in 1881, and it was still alive at the time it toppled over.
